Who We Are…

The Church of God, with U.S. offices in Anderson, Indiana, began in 1881 as a movement emphasizing the unity of God's people and holy living. Daniel S. Warner and several associates sought to forsake denominational hierarchies and formal creeds, trusting solely in the Holy Spirit as their overseer and the Bible as their statement of belief. These individuals saw themselves at the forefront of a movement to restore unity and holiness to the church. Their aim was not to establish another denomination but to promote primary allegiance to Jesus Christ so as to transcend denominational loyalties. Jesus was the subject then, and Jesus is the subject today.

Although its roots reach farther back through the years, the present congregation of the First Church of God in Covington was organized in 1926. Rev Lawrence Curtis served the church 1926-1930, and again in 1935-39. A church on Banklick Street was purchased in 1938. Rev B.F. Lawson served the church from 1930-1932; Rev. G.T. Fleming, 1933-1934, Rev Lang Rankin, 1939-1940; Rev J.W. Chitty, 1940-1945. Lots at Southern Ave. and Ashland Ave. were purchased and paid for by 1942. Rev. A.O. Jenkins served the church from 1946 – 1949. The first phase of the new church was completed on April 17, 1949. The present pastor, Rev. Alfred E Brown came in 1950. The sanctuary was completed and occupied on January 30, 1955. Dedication Day was March 20, 1955.
